A good example of a mixed factorial design would be a study on female versus male reactions to outside noise while studying. The females could be in the low, medium and high noise condition, and males could be in the low, medium and high noise condition. But a male cannot be in the female condition. So it is possible for the female to participate in all conditions of the noise (IV 1) but not participate in the other (IV 2) condition because it is not possible for them to change sexes. This is also an example of environmental psychology because we are studying the environment (noise) and its effects.

In an IV x SV subject design relating to heroin addiction, the IV is a research drug shown to ease the withdrawl symptoms of heroin used to help ease the subjects addicted. to the drug. For the other we used a placebo. The two subject variables were two groups of males and females. We used this design to demonstrate the different effects of the two levels of IV's and their effect with the subject variables.
